Fishmonger and Deli Manager
We are looking for an enthusiastic manager to head our small and skilled team at Trelawney Fish and Deli, a high-quality fishmongers and delicatessen in Newlyn, Cornwall.
Trelawney Fish is a wholesale and retail fish merchant that delivers quality fish and seafood products to the domestic and international market. Our successful retail outlet, situated at the front of our wholesale premises, just down the road from Newlyn Fish Market, builds upon this trade by offering the same quality service to retail customers. We do this not only through our shop front on The Strand but also online and by telephone with our overnight delivery service.
In addition to fresh Newlyn fish, we stock a carefully chosen selection of deli items, to compliment fish purchases and help our customers to get the best out of their seafood. We are passionate about providing a knowledgeable service, not only in the preparation of fish by our skilled filleters, but by offering advice on cooking and recipes to inspire our customers to make the most of Newlyn's finest produce.
We strive to maintain good ethical practices within our industry, supporting sustainable fisheries such as those in Mounts Bay, where Cornish Sardines are caught and delivered fresh to our counter daily. We also aim to provide our customers with up to date information on which species they should be eating, and on where and how our fish is caught, sourcing only the best quality fish from sources we know and trust.
This is an exciting opportunity to develop the existing assets of our retail business, whilst also contributing your own personal approach and developing new ideas going forward. You will oversee all operations in the shop, taking charge of other staff members to ensure smooth and efficient day to day running. You will take responsibility for maintaining impeccable Food Safety standards and ensuring the delivery of great customer service, also motivating other members of staff to uphold these values.
You will help to consistently maintain the appearance of the shop and deli by creating enticing fish displays and managing stock, ensuring that sales opportunities are maximised and costs are controlled. You will liaise with managers in the wholesale department to ensure that the counter and fridge stores have sufficient quantities of fresh fish, gaining an understanding of seasonal, tidal and weather related circumstances which affect supply.
Role and Aims
The ideal candidate for the role will be ambitious, and committed to the development of the shop whilst maintaining the high standards and reputation that we have built over the years. They will demonstrate an ability to lead and support the development of our small team of staff, coaching them on procedures and product knowledge. Previous experience in a managerial role is beneficial, but enthusiastic and competent candidates looking to develop their skills in a more advanced position will also be considered.
A genuine interest in food and cooking will be invaluable, and we hope that you can share your passion for fish and seafood, exciting both customers and staff to help generate sales and engagement with our produce. Experience in the fish trade is welcome, but not necessary as full training will be provided. You must be a highly effective communicator and also be able to operate confidently and independently to ensure that all duties within the shop, including staffing, stock management, generation of mail order sales, and online promotion are successfully undertaken. Finally the candidate will be IT and social media literate, and assist us in developing our online presence to generate and increase sales. The shop opens for a half day on Saturdays, and candidates must be able to work these hours.
In addition to overseeing the daily running of operations, you will also be given the opportunity to develop new ideas, in particular we are eager to explore the possibilities offered by online sales, and to reach a greater customer base by increasing our mail order capacity. An effectively designed and maintained website will help us to achieve this. As manager you will have the freedom to fully explore these opportunities, contracting a web designer to redesign our website, establishing a consistent style which will help to promote Trelawney Fish as an online brand and supplier. We are in a prime position close to the supply of some fantastic produce that could make a great success of this venture, providing an opportunity for you as an effective manager to oversee a marked improvement in both revenue and reputation.
We hope that an injection of new ideas will create a dynamic environment in the shop, with potential for further development, particularly to capitalise on the forthcoming summer season, a very important time of year for us.
The starting salary will be reviewed shortly following successful employment, and offers the possibility of increase for the right candidate.
